Responsibility Redefined:   The 5 Essential Skills for Your Response Toolkit

5/1/2024

**Check out our brand new: The Bridge Resume Page!
So which skills are needed to be able to respond?

Our ability to respond depends a lot on learning a good repertoire of skills. We actually ultimately respond to any kind of situation with an action that requires a skill. Based on DeYoung’s study of human behavior, skills can be perceived as evolutionary adaptations. This means that over long periods of time, our ancestors have developed certain behavioral tendencies that work better than others, and the most efficient ones have been passed down through genes and culture.
Following this understanding and the classification of these broad and encompassing categories of skills, The Bridge supports students to develop 5 Core Skills (the PROPS) that serve as the foundation of their ability to respond to all life situations and goals:
Picture
PROACTIVITY

Proactivity is about directing one’s energy toward a goal. When we are proactive, we have a clear purpose (big or small) and are willing to drive our actions toward it, even if it’s outside of our comfort zone.
  • When we lack proactivity, we may feel aimless or lacking the drive to respond to a situation.
RESILIENCE

This skill helps us modulate fear. How do I respond to this situation? Do I confront it? Do I retreat? Resilience is not just about persevering when we are challenged, but also about maintaining emotional balance.

  • When we lack resilience we may not know how to discern when to approach or avoid a situation; we may overreact or underreact, we may overthink it or underthink it.
OPENNESS
We are not isolated beings; we depend on other people and our environment for our wellbeing. It is essential to be in an open and reciprocal relationship with our surroundings.

This means that we are able to contribute to the wellbeing of others and our surroundings as well as stay open to the feedback we get from them.

  • When we lack openness, we cut ourselves off from learning, we make lots of assumptions and we don’t nourish crucial relationships.
PROBLEM-SOLVING

Problem-solving relies heavily on other skills like curiosity and creativity. Problem-solving requires an attentive and open mind to possibilities, connections between parts, and finding a match between external and internal resources.

How do I get from point A to point B? How do we strengthen our team? How do I get over my anxiety? Those are questions that problem-solving helps with.

  • When we lack problem-solving, we get stuck with what we know and in our typical way of doing things, and like people say, we can’t expect different results if we always do the same thing.
SELF-GOVERNANCE
This skill helps us prioritize what’s important. Whenever we want to accomplish a goal, it is crucial that we organize our mind, our space, and our tasks. We need to stay focused and stay aware of our current actions and their future consequences.
  • When we lack self-governance we get distracted, we can be impulsive, and get overwhelmed with tasks that require consistency and long-term planning.

Guided Exploration of Skill Development

Our students are constantly invited to get “in the driver’s seat” of their experience by choosing the kinds of activities as well as the pace and schedule arrangement that best works for them.

They are given lots of opportunities for healthy risk taking, exploration and trial-and-error. However, they are not left to their own devices; we are guiding them by sitting “in the passenger’s seat”. By doing so, we carefully guide students to activate their response-ability in a scaffolded way through every attempt to push slightly past their current ability, recognize the skills implemented, and discover their unique formula to respond to their goals and life’s challenges.
Now that you've learned about PROPS skills, could you identify each core skill when you see it in action or hear someone talking?

Here's a reflection from one of our graduates on his experience at The Bridge 11 years ago. See if you can identify when he's referring to the different PROPS!

Redefining Responsibility as the ability to respond!

4/16/2024

Responsibility - it's such a loaded word.

We all want to be responsible, but it can sound like such a drag!

Picture
At the Bridge, we closely examine this nuanced concept and we challenge conventional notions, embracing a perspective where the essence of responsibility transcends mere obligation and duty. Instead, responsibility is akin to stepping onto a path of personal evolution—an adventure brimming with self-discovery and finding what you have to offer to your world.
We urge individuals to cultivate awareness, discernment, and adaptability; these important skills not only assist emerging adults in navigating life's uncertainties but also foster their ability to thrive amidst its challenges and contribute their unique talents to make a difference to themselves and others.

Join us as we unravel the layers of responsibility,
inviting you to partake in acompelling progression of newfound agency and mattering.

Picture
The word responsibility tends to be understood as duty, obligation or even as blame for something. This definition may evoke a sense of mere obedience and not the kind of dynamic growth intended for our students. Instead of that conception of responsibility, at The Bridge, we follow Fritz Perls’s (1971) interpretation, which basically breaks the word into its two root words: “response ability”.

Responsibility (the ability to respond) is The Bridge’s main goal and desired outcome for our students, which entails gaining and using awareness, discernment and adaptability. Before coming to us, our students have not had an adequate ability to respond to life’s challenges. Because of this, their wellbeing has suffered and they have failed to meet their goals, which in turn hurts their confidence.
Picture
Picture
To become responsible means that we implement a repertoire of skills that allow us to respond to many (ideally all) situations that life throws at us or goals that we want to achieve. Since life throws at us all kinds of unpredictable challenges, and goals vary immensely depending on many external and internal factors, possessing different kinds of skills, and recognizing how and when to use them is crucial.

This already tells us that one’s ability to respond (or responsibility) needs:
  • Awareness: to understand the situation or goal at hand,
  • Discernment: to choose the skills and response that best fit the situation,
  • Adaptability: to modify our behavior or perspective, to learn new responses
Picture
On the contrary, when we lack the ability to respond, we may react instead of responding, which means we are not aware, choosing or adapting, but mainly just unconsciously using old responses to new situations. Those work sometimes, but most of the time they don’t.

Don't forget to check out this 1-minute video from one of our alumni students redefining what responsibility means to him after his Bridge experience!
David graduated from The Bridge in 2016. He then went to Georgia State University and earned a degree in Philosophy and Chinese. Through discipline and sacrifice, he has successfully managed to combine working jobs that provide him stability, as well as give him the chance to sustain and further his creative projects
"The Bridge planted seeds of responsibility;
it was an introduction to being an adult."

"It took me from where I was to be willing to throw myself  into the next problem. That's how you have to approach it, as a one-step-at-a-time type of thing"

Stay tuned to learn more about which skills are needed to learn to be responsible! 🔎

How The Soulful Influence of Costa Rica Revitalizes Emerging Adults Today

Part 2: Supportive Remedies at The Bridge! 🗣️🌍

After returning from my eye-opening visit to the programs within Supportive Immersion Institute in Costa Rica, I found myself consumed by thoughts that lingered long after my departure. Little did I know just how profound the impact would be on my understanding of cultural immersion.

Sitting among the community of young adults at The Bridge, I was drawn into a whirlwind of stories – tales that resonated with themes of self-discovery, growth, and connection. Each narrative, from reflections on their past selves to the evolution of their identities, painted a vibrant portrait of the incredible power of immersion.
It was in these candid conversations that my perception of cultural immersion underwent a profound shift. The ways in which each young person described their experience with their homestay families and how they forged deep connections and sincere appreciation for their time together were quite moving.

This added layer of depth illuminated the true essence of immersion, revealing it as more than just a series of activities, but rather as portals to profound connections with both the people and the world around them. And it was not merely about experiencing life in a different country; the true significance lay in the unique cultural immersion found within the country of Costa Rica.
Picture
Picture
The Bridge stands as a testament to the fusion of supportive immersion and gap programs, nestled in a country where community, family, service, and respect hold deep meaning.

From the moment I set foot in Atenas, Costa Rica, I was struck by the rhythm of life here. The incessant buzz of "must do's" and "to do's" seemed to fade away with each interaction, replaced by a sense of ease and belonging that enveloped me.

What struck me most was the genuine warmth and hospitality of the community members, homestay families, and staff at The Bridge.
Far from feeling like a stranger in a foreign land, I was welcomed with open arms, as if returning home after a long journey.

The deep connections forged between The Bridge team and its community partners underscored care that extended unreservedly to everyone involved. This extension of care fosters belonging and offers freedom to explore, with a safety net of support in place.
Picture
I share this not only to emphasize the significance of such a nurturing environment but also because it speaks to the very heart of the challenges faced by emerging adults today. In a world fraught with anxiety, uncertainty, and isolation, finding a place where you are accepted and celebrated for who you are is nothing short of a revelation.

It's a space where the masks we wear to conceal our insecurities can finally be laid to rest, allowing our true selves to emerge, unencumbered by fear or judgment. A chance to rediscover joy and creativity, unburdened by the weight of what isn't working in our lives.

Emerging Adults: What's Really Going On?

PART 1 : What's Really Going On?

In the whirlwind of emerging adulthood, that pivotal moment of shedding who you were to become who you wish to become can hit hard. It’s when we are all trying to navigate the maze-like twists and turns of life, grappling with big questions about who we are, what we are here for, and where we fit into this vast world around us.

Whether you were the straight-A student with everything neatly mapped out or the one who felt like you were constantly playing catch-up, socially or academically, there is a point where we all find ourselves at a crossroads.
Suddenly, uncertainty looms large, and we are left feeling adrift, maybe even a little isolated, wondering if anyone else is weathering the same storm.

Some of us bounce in and out of these moments as we stumble forward, while others find ourselves stuck, unsure how to break free. And yet, life barrels on, heedless of whether we are keeping pace. The weight of it all can feel suffocating, and before we know it,
we have been swept off course, struggling to find our way back to solid ground. 🌞🦋🌈
Picture

For those who transitioned into young adulthood against the backdrop of the Covid era, the landscape is fraught
with unprecedented challenges, the full weight of which is yet to be fully comprehended.

While we are confident that the scenario described above resonates with anyone navigating the tumultuous seas of young adulthood, it's crucial to acknowledge that for those just beginning this journey, there's an added layer of complexity to contend with.
Anxiety is heightened, yet understanding the root source feels unattainable, given how elusive it can be to pinpoint the exact cause. This heightened sense of disconnect and uncertainty can make it feel impossible to reclaim the sense of self they once knew.

As we ponder the profound challenges faced by emerging adults in today's tumultuous world, it becomes evident that traditional support approaches may fall short.
Looking ahead to Part Two of our series, we'll explore how The Bridge in Costa Rica offers hope amidst the uncertainty. Through a holistic framework deeply rooted in Costa Rican culture, The Bridge embodies a paradigm shift in supporting young adults. By fostering deep connections, community engagement, and an expanded vision of the future, The Bridge guides young adults to rediscover themselves and their potential contributions to the world.

How Gap Year Programs Can Support Mental Health and Personal Growth

2/13/2024

Gap years aren’t just for taking a break; they can be the very thing that kickstarts healing and growth.

At The Bridge, we focus on Supportive Immersion: a unique blend of structure, independence, and therapeutic reflection that promotes emotional wellness.
Picture
Here’s why a gap year with support is uniquely powerful for mental health:
  • Experience Over Screens: Today’s young adults face “experiential deprivation.” Real-world interactions help build resilience and reduce anxiety.
  • Deliberate Challenge: Comfort doesn’t build strength - intentional, guided challenge does. Our students practice life skills in unfamiliar but supported contexts.
  • Authentic Belonging: We create a community where students feel they matter and where their gifts are seen, valued, and nurtured.
  • Response-Ability: Students build PROPS Skills: Proactivity, Resilience, Openness, Problem-solving, and Self-governance.

From cooking meals to leading community projects in Costa Rica, students leave with a stronger sense of identity, capability, and confidence.

It’s normal to feel afraid of taking a gap year abroad. What if you feel homesick? What if it’s too much? What if you don’t fit in?

That’s why The Bridge Costa Rica was designed for students like you - those who crave growth but need support, not pressure.
Picture
Here’s what makes The Bridge different from independent travel or traditional gap programs:
  • Built-In Community: You’ll live with peers and mentors who walk with you through the journey.
  • Scaffolded Independence: We don’t throw you in the deep end. You’ll gain skills step-by-step - budgeting, transportation, social navigation, etc.
  • Safe Cultural Exposure: Costa Rica offers a rich, welcoming culture that’s different but not overwhelming.
  • Emotional Support: Group and one-on-one coaching is available to help you process your experience and move through fear.

Fear isn’t a sign to stay home. It’s a sign you care, and with the right support, it becomes fuel for transformation.

"I learned gratitude and work ethic"

"They have given me immense hope that my children can have a more comfortable and bigger space to live in." "I am so grateful."

These are a few encouraging quotes from our latest Aventura project! We are working in collaboration with an organization called SIFAIS.
Picture
Our main project is improving the living conditions for a single mom and her two kids! We are working on restoring and doing a lot of home improvements to their house, in addition to collaborating in their community center.

Student Takeaways

"I learned gratitude and work ethic. I remember the same people on the bus waking up early every day. They were going to work, dealing with the traffic, and so were we."

"I was impressed with how the locals find happiness despite their difficult conditions. I learned how to find happiness and joy in the little things. "
"It stood out to me listening to Griselda saying that what we did for her is just work for us, but for the community, it was an inspiration and letting people know that we care of them; that they are not forgotten."

"My learning was being more confident about myself and the work I can do; seeing what I'm capable of."
Aventuras are an opportunity for our students to dive into different people’s lifestyles as well as to see themselves as contributors by developing various projects throughout their program stay.

  • "This was my favorite class in my 4 years in college"
  • "Every young adult should take this class"
  • "I wasn’t expecting it to hit so deep with me, I felt very connected with everybody."
  • The idea of community and culture made me think about what the importance of it is in my life and what I want for myself in the future."

Watch this short video showing students reflect on the class and their memorable field trip experience:
The 9 Dimensions of Healthy Living framework stems from the robust research by the Gates Foundation on the "Dimensions of Young Adult Success".

After using this framework to guide and structure the personal growth and program experiences of our students for several years we thought, wouldn't this framework make for a really interesting and valuable college course?... So, we partnered up with Veritas University to offer a course called Sustainable Lifestyles, focused on young adult wellbeing and centered around the 9 Dimensions of Healthy Living.

In addition to providing students with lots of information on how to navigate their wellbeing, it has tons of experiential elements that make it really engaging.

How to Choose a Gap Year Program When You Need More Than Just Travel

8/23/2023

Picture
If your goal is more than just seeing the world - if you need time to heal, grow, and find direction - then choosing the right gap year program is crucial.

Here are five questions to ask:
  1. Will I be supported emotionally? If you’ve struggled with anxiety, depression, or burnout, emotional support should be part of the program, not an afterthought.
  2. Will I be challenged in a healthy way? Growth happens outside your comfort zone, but only when that discomfort is safe and supported.
  3. Will I learn real-life skills? Look for programs like The Bridge that teach practical skills like cooking, budgeting, time management, leadership.
  4. Will I have mentors and structure? A good program offers 24/7 support, guided reflection, and clear expectations.
  5. Will this help me move forward? Programs like The Bridge offer college credit, resume-building experiences, and a clear path to next steps.

If you’re asking, “I need more than just travel…what’s out there?” you’re already on the right path. The Bridge is here to help you cross into the next stage of your life with purpose and confidence.

Is a Gap Year really for us?

6/8/2022

What if you were guaranteed immense clarity and direction just from taking a simple year off of school to travel abroad? What if it could propel you way farther than jumping straight into college? Would you do it without hesitation?

Danny Recio, Director and Founder of The Bridge Gap Program, took a gap year in South Africa after high school. It was during his time there where he had a “coming of age” experience and found his calling in working with people. All because of his time abroad, Danny went on to start gap year programs - a therapeutic option called The Bridge (a therapeutic community for young men) and a more traditional coed gap program (Si! Gap Program) in Costa Rica, guiding them along their own coming of age experiences.

Picture
In this episode of Success is Subjective, Danny joins Joanna Lilley to share his journey as he traveled as a young adult, exploring different cultures and how his gap year experience has stuck with him, even a decade later. Listen in for Danny’s insight on the impact the right gap year program can have on a young adult, possibly changing the entire trajectory of their life.

A participant shares how he found meaning that mattered through his internship

Here’s a really cool example of finding something within you and offering it to the world:
This student came to us really thirsty to find meaning and purpose but was really struggling to find it. He describes the process of finding something within him that he could offer the world around him in the following way:
Picture
Student: "I met these health professionals who visit people with disabilities in their homes. We visited a couple of these homes and I noticed their houses were not very accommodating to their disability. It occurred to me that I could do something about that. So I was helped connect with someone who knows a lot about construction, don Kike, who worked with me on simple projects like building railings and ramps in these people’s homes. Just getting into those houses…people chip in, neighbors come over…it’s small projects. I don’t know if they mean a lot to other people, but they definitely mean a lot to me.”
This student also washed cars to raise funds for the materials he used, and managed to fund them almost entirely on his own, which I believe added a sense of ownership and empowerment to the experience.

"I personally found this project profoundly meaningful and moving, but I also happen to know that it was tremendously touching to the families." He and I visited some of the families after the project. One of them in particular, the mother with the son in the wheelchair in the picture. She was so grateful, moved to tears to see our student, asking repeatedly when she’d see him again. You know, I think she was thankful for the ramp he built, but I got the sense that she was more grateful that he had shown care for her and her son, she was grateful that he had played Legos with her son and valued him as a person.

I don’t think this young man is going to go on to work in construction or washing cars; that’s not necessarily what he found within him. I think he found that taking initiative to help the world around him motivates him and gives him energy. I imagine that will become a central part of his identity.
